On 26 May 2021, Channel News Asia reported[1]:

“Australia’s Victoria state sees biggest one-day rise in COVID-19 cases in 7 months”

We were curious because they left out the actual number of cases.

On May 26, @VicGovDH reported[2]:

“Reported yesterday: 10 new local cases and no new cases acquired overseas”.

And SBS reported[3]:

“Mr Merlino on Wednesday morning said all confirmed cases were linked, but the government was ‘very concerned by the number and by the kind of exposure sites’ [2 attended AFL matches].

Merlino: “I want to be upfront with everyone this morning. I cannot rule out taking some further action, but we’ll update people as soon as I know”.
‘It’s fair to say that the next 24 hours are going to be particularly critical’.

So what is he getting so excited about?

On Friday, July 17 2020, Channel News Asia reported[4]:

SYDNEY: Australia’s state of Victoria on Friday (Jul 17) reported a record increase in daily coronavirus cases for a second consecutive day. Victoria reported 428 new daily infections, a day after logging its previous high of 317 new cases, said Premier Daniel Andrews.

The daily increase in cases peaked at 687 on August 4, 2020[5]:

It is over 9 months since the peak in August 2020. James Merlino and Daniel Andrews have had over 9 months to implement an efficient contact tracing system. Moreover, the vaccine is available and being rolled out across Victoria, starting with vulnerable people.

As of yesterday[6], 335,635 people had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Presumably vulnerable people first!

So why is Merlino threatening another lockdown?

Merlino[3]: “I want to be upfront with everyone this morning. I cannot rule out taking some further action, but we’ll update people as soon as I know”.

Hype.

Yesterday, India reported 211,553 new cases[7].
